Thailand is at war. The nation is in a battle against the bulge. Obesity, once an inconspicuous concern, has evolved into a pressing health dilemma as food trends have changed from the healthier diet of traditional Thai cuisine to high sugar and high fat fast food choices.

The alarming rise of obesity in Thailand in quite shocking. The latest data from Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health paints a stark picture: in 2022, a staggering 47.8% of Thai adults were overweight or obese, a dramatic jump from 34.75% in 2016. Bangkok, the bustling metropolis, bears the brunt of this crisis with the highest level of belt-busting obesity.

While portion control is vital in fighting fat, it's equally crucial to consider the quality of the food we consume. The energy density of food, determined by the ratio of nutrients—carbohydrates, proteins, and fats—matters.

To tackle obesity we must focus on nutrient-dense foods, rich in fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Think vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Make a plate that's 50% veggies, 25% lean protein like fish, and the remaining 25% whole grains, such as brown rice.

Obesity isn't just about food; it's a lifestyle issue. Factors like low physical activity, insufficient sleep, hormonal imbalances, and genetics also play a role. That's why a holistic approach is key.

Exercise regularly, aiming for at least 150 minutes a week or 30 minutes a day, five times a week. Prioritize sleep, aiming for 8-9 hours nightly, and ensure you're in bed before 10 PM. Steer clear of smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and you'll be making strides towards a healthier you.

Let's unite in the fight against obesity and educate the Thai youth about the perils of high sugar and high fat fast foods, and the benefits of a healthy, activity lifestyle.
