There’s a growing healthcare challenge in Thailand - diabetes. This burgeoning public health issue now has one in 10 adult Thais diagnosed with diabetes. It's time to dive into the world of diabetes, a condition that beckons us all to be vigilant and informed.

Diabetes, or diabetes mellitus, is a chronic condition that disrupts the body's ability to harness energy from the foods we consume. There are two main types - Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1, often diagnosed in childhood, arises when the immune system mistakenly targets the body's own insulin-producing beta cells, leaving the body without this vital hormone to regulate blood sugar levels.

Type 2 diabetes is more prevalent, responsible for 95% of diabetes cases among adults in Thailand. Once dubbed "adult-onset diabetes," it has now infiltrated childhood, riding on the rise in obesity rates. Though milder than its Type 1 counterpart, Type 2 diabetes can unleash a cascade of health complications over time.

What's concerning is that young adults in Thailand face limited access to national screening programs for hyperglycaemia, obesity, and high blood pressure. Early detection and intervention can be a game-changer in diabetes management.

While there's no cure for diabetes, adopting a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes. A balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are paramount. Reducing sugar intake, opting for low-calorie foods, and cutting back on animal fats and processed junk food can work wonders.

A nutrient-rich diet of vegetables, legumes, fruits, and whole grains, omega-3-rich fish like salmon while opting for low-sugar and low-fat products is the way to go

For those already living with Type 2 diabetes, a balanced diet and exercise can be key components of management.

Medications may be prescribed to support insulin utilization. Keeping a close watch on blood sugar levels is crucial for diabetes management. Glucometers are essential tools for tracking sugar levels and guiding insulin injections. Alternatively, a flash glucose monitoring system provides continuous readings of interstitial fluid sugar levels, offering insights into the body's sugar fluctuations.

Diabetes in Thailand is not just a medical condition; it's a call to action for healthy living. A diabetes diagnosis need not spell doom, but it serves as a poignant reminder to embrace preventive measures. A healthy lifestyle is the cornerstone of defence against this disease. By making mindful choices in our daily lives, we can safeguard our well-being and thwart the rising tide of diabetes in Thailand.
